On May 7, the Collegial Centre for Educational Materials Development (CCDMD) revealed the names of the prize winners in the 8th World of Images Intercollegiate Photo Contest. The names were unveiled at the opening of the exhibition featuring the top 29 photos at Collège de Maisonneuve, which hosted the exhibition. The six students are sharing prizes worth a total of $3,000.

The CCDMD holds the competition to encourage young photographers and promote the production and sharing of high-quality artistic or documentary photographs. It is exclusively reserved for students on the Québec CEGEP network. The 2018–2019 edition of the competition ended on March 13. This year, 1,097 photographs were submitted by 265 students from 64 institutions in the college network.

Valérie Dubuc, a commercial photography student at Collège Marsan, won the top honours, worth $1,000, for her photo L’homme à la fenêtre. Juliette Balthazard, a communications, arts and literature student in the film studies option at Cégep de Saint-Laurent, took second prize, worth $750, for Désir aveugle – 01. Clarence de Bayser, studying social sciences, international issues profile, at Cégep de Saint-Laurent, came third, with a prize worth $500, for Croissance verticale. Finally, the People’s Choice award, worth $250, went to Nicolas Chiasson, a communications, arts and literature student in the film studies option at Cégep de Sainte-Foy, for Flagrant délit, the photograph that received the most votes from visitors to the website.

For this 8th edition of the competition, the jury was made up of Gabor Szilasi, a photographer and the contest’s patron of honour; two professional photographers – Guillaume Levasseur, photojournalist at Le Devoir, and Valérie Racine, editor of Photo solution magazine; three representatives of the colleges – Raymonde Bergeron, photographer at Collège de Maisonneuve, Cyr-Marc Debien, production coordinator at the CCDMD, and Marie-Stéphanie Taschereau, photography teacher at Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf; and the top prize-winner from the 2017–2018 contest, Philippe Manh.

All the members of the jury and the organizing committee extend their congratulations to the winners and thank them, and all the other participants, for contributing to the World of Images website.

The finalists’ and winners’ photographs were on display at Collège de Maisonneuve until May 10, thanks to the valuable support of Stéphane Laplante, from the Student and Community Services department. The exhibition will also be on display from June 3 to September 3, 2019, at the Musée national de la photographie in Drummondville.
