Play with web words in the Francojeu des cégeps

February 20, 2017

The CCDMD is inviting you to take part in the 2017 edition of the Francojeu des cégeps, held as part of the Francofête in collaboration with the l’Office québécois de la langue française. March 1 to 31, on Facebook (with or without a Facebook account), you can play the game and take part in the online contest, which is reserved for members of the college community – students, teaching staff and non-teaching staff alike.

The Francojeu is of particular interest to student life coordinators, language and literature teachers, French help centre assistants and the French promotion coordinators. Feel free to add the Francojeu to the French language promotion activities at your college.

2016: Regionalisms

The 2016 Francojeu edition featured 10 Francofête words illustrating realities specific to different regions in the Francophonie. One of the activities offered was a contest: participants suggested regionalisms – either Québécisms or words from elsewhere, whether or not they appeared in a dictionary. You can see quizzes from the earlier editions in the Le coin de l’Office section of the CCDMD’s Amélioration du français website.

2017: Web words

New technology has taken a giant leap in the last 25 years, and the featured words for Francofête 2017 clearly show how French is adapting to the revolution : avatar, canular, émoticône, favori, fureteur, héberger, nomade, nuage, pirate et télésnober.

This year’s 10 Francofête words reflect the French language’s capacity to express the realities arising from new technologies and emerging digital practices. By answering the game quiz, participants discover how French is expanding with new words and original meanings. The quiz answers provide explanations about different aspects of the words and offer food for thought on a phenomenon that demonstrates the richness of the French language.

Participants will also be entered in a draw for prizes. At the end of the quiz, they can submit their own “technologism” to the Francojeu des cégeps 2017 jury: a new word or a word that has been given a new meaning, whether or not it appears in a dictionary. The winning word will win a prize of $500. The theme of digital reality is topical for everyone: students and staff, young and old, francophones, anglophones and allophones.

Make use of the Francojeu at your college

Here are some ideas for the team in charge of language promotion activities:

  • Play the Francojeu publicly (in the cafeteria, student café, agora, etc.). Project the game questionnaire on a screen and have the audience respond by raising their hands or using i-clickers. At the end, invite the audience to enter the contest on Facebook for the chance to win a prize. The “Create a technologism!” activity seems particularly well-suited to group participation.
  • Create a bank of favourite technologisms: Set up a space where people can write (and define) their very own technological expression (see Francojeu “$500 activity”).

If you use the Francojeu in your language promotion activities, please share your experience by contacting Dominique Fortier.

Let the games begin!
