Unveiling of the 2014–2015 World of Images Intercollegiate Photo Competition Winners

May 22, 2015

The prizes for the 2014–2015 World of Images Intercollegiate Photo Competition were awarded on May 22, 2015 at the Espace Normand Laurin at Cégep Marie-Victorin, at the opening of the exhibit of the 29 finalists. This competition, organized by the CCDMD (Collegial Centre for Educational Materials Development), has the dual goal of encouraging budding photographers and contributing to the production and sharing of high-quality artistic or documentary photographic works. It is reserved for students of the Québec college network.

This year, six students won prizes worth a total of $3,000. In all, more than 1,270 photos were submitted by 325 students, with submissions from almost every college institution in Québec.

Philippe Daaboul, enrolled in the professional photography program at Collège Inter-Dec, took first prize ($1,000) for his photo called Moreira. Paul Labranche, a science student at Collège Gérald-Godin, won second prize ($750) for his photo Encadré. Geneviève Thibault, a student in the photography program at Cégep de Matane, received third prize ($500) for Zone grise.

The members of the jury also made special mention of several other photos submitted by the 29 finalists. Five students received special mention: Audrey-Ann Brunelle, a dietary techniques student at Collège de Maisonneuve, for her photos Contraste, Paisible et Sous le même soleil; Cindy Mélissa Boisvert, a science student at Cégep de l’Outaouais, for her photo Premier amour; Jean-Christophe Deshais-Beaudoin, an arts and literature student at Cégep Garneau, for Pont noir; and Dominique Denoncourt, an arts, literature and communications student at Conservatoire Lassalle, for Regards transpercés.

The $250 People’s Choice award went to Léa Debruyne, an arts and literature student at Collège Gérald-Godin, for Fumée sans feu, the photo that won the most votes from Web users. Finally, two participation prizes worth $250 each and drawn at random were awarded to Tajinder Kaur, a John Abbott student, and Matthew Cain, a Gérald-Godin student.

For this fourth edition of the competition, the jury was comprised of seven people: the honorary chair, Jacques Nadeau, a photojournalist with Le Devoir; three representatives from the colleges: Geneviève Blais, an art history teacher and ICT advisor at Collège Gérald-Godin, Denis Bruneau, a geography teacher at Collège Montmorency, and Eric Girouard, a teacher in the Publication Design and Hypermedia Technology department at John Abbott College; one of the members of the competition organizing committee, Véronica Gill, a communications advisor at the CCDMD; and a CCDMD project manager, Louise Comtois. Dawson College photography graduate Marie-Jade Dubé-Côté, one of the winners of last year’s competition, was the seventh member of the jury.

The exhibit of the finalists’ and winners’ photos will be on display in the Espace Normand Laurin at Cégep Marie-Victorin until August 7, 2015. This exhibit was made possible thanks to Marie Blain, assistant dean, France Séguin, academic advisor/ICT, and Élise Bélanger, coordinator of the Service des ressources didactiques et documentaires at Cégep Marie-Victorin.
