Successful launch at Vanier College

October 31, 2014

The official launch of the Infants and Toddlers: Video Observation Bank website took place on October 30, 2014 at Vanier College.

This new resource offers a bank of 200 video sequences on young children in daycare situations in Québec and serves as an observation lab for students and teachers in the Early Childhood Education Techniques program, allowing them to monitor the daily lives of children in daycare institutions or family care centres.

The bank of videos was developed by Mary Johnson, an Early Childhood Education teacher at Vanier College, in collaboration with the CCDMD. The author enthusiastically presented her project to about 20 guests who came to the event.

"This site provides users with a perfect window into the world of infants and toddlers and their daily experiences in child care," says Johnson. "As well, users witness the wide range of tasks and roles that early childhood professionals take on each day. Finally, many of the clips highlight the importance of the partnerships that form between parents and the educators who care for their young children."

Although the primary users of the video bank will be students and teachers of Early Childhood Education, there are many videos that could be of interest to parents. In addition to the extensive bank of short video clips, the site also features longer sequences designed to offer viewers a more sustained experience. These longer sequences provide an excellent idea of just what goes on in daycares on a typical day. Finally, the Exercises section features a set of short quizzes that teachers and students can use to explore various aspects of the task of observing young children.

The CCDMD thanks Vanier College for this successful launch!
