Invitation to a UNAC lecture on Syria

Rachid AntoniusThe CCDMD invites you to attend a public lecture on the geopolitical situation in Syria. “Syrie : La géopolitique a-t-elle étouffée la démocratie?” will be presented by Rachad Antonius, full professor in the UQAM sociology department and assistant director of the UQAM Chaire de recherche en immigration, ethnicité et citoyenneté (CRIEC).

These are the key themes his lecture will explore:
•    Basic background information about Syria – society, culture, recent history, strategic position. 

•    Local reasons for uprising and dynamics of its militarization. 

•    Current composition of the rebel army and political opposition and the role of jihadist elements.
•    Regional regime-change issues. 

•    Concrete role of regional and international powers and current impasse. 

•    Issue of the media representation of the conflict.

The event, presented by the United Nations Association of Canada (UNAC), will take place on Thursday, April 4, 2013, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Room D-R200 of the Athanase-David Pavilion of Université du Québec à Montréal, at 1440 Saint-Denis, in Montreal.

Entry is free, but you must reserve your seat at acnu@uqam.ca or 514-987-3000, ext. 7621. The speech will be given in French, followed by a question period in French and English. Mr. Antonius’s lecture will be posted online on the CCDMD Les conférences numériques website in a few weeks.
