Intercollegiate photography competition honours students from several CEGEPs

May 17, 2013

Six CEGEP students shared prizes worth $3,000 at the award ceremony for the second Intercollegiate Photo Contest, World of Images. The prizes were handed out on May 16 at the Collège Ahuntsic library, at the opening of an exhibit of the 31 top photos.

The CCDMD (Collegial Centre for Educational Materials Development) organized the contest to encourage young photographers and promote the production and sharing of high-quality artistic or documentary photographs. It is exclusively reserved for students in the Québec CEGEP network.

The 20122013 edition of the contest ended on April 5. A total of 1,007 photographs were submitted by 269 students from 61 institutions in the CEGEP network a very healthy participation rate for the early years of the competition!

The big winners, each taking home a prize worth $750, are Magali Dumas, Alexis Fortin and Guillaume Levasseur. The first two, enrolled in the commercial photography program at Collège Marsan, won in the Artistic and Documentary categories, respectively, for their photos Kimoshima and Pourquoi? Guillaume Levasseur, a photography student at Cégep du Vieux Montréal, earned his award in the Québec Intercultural Interaction category for Portrait – Travailleur en serres.

The Peoples Choice award, worth $250, was given to Giovanna Olmos, a student in the Creative Arts, Literature and Languages program at Dawson College, for Couple, the photo that received the most votes from Web visitors.

The jury members also praised the quality of several other photos among the 31 finalists. Five students received special mention: Charlotte Horvath, a natural environment techniques student at Cégep de Saint-Félicien, for LAmi; Arnaud Hocquinghem, a photography student at Collège Marsan, for Le Réso (encore); Isabelle Gadbois, a photography student at Dawson College for Sourire canin; and Dominic Lafleur, a Collège de Valleyfield student, for La concentration dun cowboy. Alexis Fortin, winner of the Documentary prize, also garnered a special mention for his photograph Liberté.

Finally, two participation prizes of $250 each were drawn at random and given to two students who submitted photographs to the contest between May 31, 2012, and April 5, 2013: Kim Angell-Deslauriers, an arts and technology student at the Cégep de Jonquière, and Dérik Maltais, a natural sciences student at Cégep de lOutaouais.

The jury was made up of eight people: the patron of honour, Isabelle Hayeur, an image artist; representatives from the CEGEPs; members of the organizing committee and the CCDMD; and the winner of the 20112012 contest. The jury members and the contest committee extend their congratulations to the winners for the awards and thank all the participants for contributing to the World of Images website.

The finalists photo exhibit can be seen in the entrance hall of the Collège Ahuntsic library until May 30.
