Lewis Structures II

Three-Dimensional Visualization of Molecules

Award - Prix du Ministre

A Lewis structure is one of the ways of showing a molecule. The software program is a simulation. From a list, the user chooses a molecule to build by associating atoms to obtain a three-dimensional image. To help the student understand the process more easily, the software program provides the possibility of making a certain number of verifications such as those related to the number of bonds, the approximate values of the angles of bonds and the polarity of molecules.

Objectives

- Develop an efficient algorithm when elaborating the Lewis diagrams of molecules and polyatomic ions

- Deduce, according to the Lewis diagrams of species, the geometric characteristics, the covalent bonding and the polarity of studied molecules or ions

- Visualize the three-dimensional studied species
